South Korea's Hyundai Mobis has surpassed Japan's Aisin, its biggest competitor in auto parts excluding batteries, to break into the top five on the global market.

A car industry source on Tuesday said that on the list of the Top 100 Global Auto Parts Suppliers of the Detroit-based Automotive News, Hyundai Mobis was sixth after Germany's Bosch, Japan's Denso, Germany's ZF, Canada's Magna International and China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL).

The rankings this year included manufacturers of batteries, a core component of electric vehicles, thus excluding battery maker CATL, Hyundai Mobis made the top five for auto parts.

The annual list is based on the volume of finished vehicle sales by global companies.

For the first time, Hyundai Mobis surpassed in the rankings Japan's Aisin, a traditional auto parts power and the South Korean company's biggest competitor that finished seventh.

Debuting on the list in 2006 at 25th, Hyundai Mobis rose to 10th in 2011 and sixth last year. Its finished vehicle sales of $32.2 billion also topped Aisin's $31.2 billion.

The inclusion of battery makers this year allowed 11 companies from South Korea to make the list.

After Hyundai Mobis came Samsung SDI Co. at 16th and Hyundai Motor Group affiliates Hyundai Transys 35th and Hyundai Wia Corp. 43rd. SK On was 44th.

The list also had 30 newcomers from Europe, 21 from North America, 22 from Japan and 12 from China.
