South Korean fuel cell manufacturer Doosan Fuel Cell, and Kolon Global Corp., a South Korean company that specializes in the production of industrial materials, chemicals and films, have teamed up to expand long-term business and cooperation areas.  At a signing ceremony on Wednesday, they said they will cooperate in developing an eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell business model using biogas.

The business model that the two companies will collaborate on is a method of using biogas generated from sewage treatment plants as hydrogen fuel cell sources after removing impurities and mixing them with natural gas.

The electricity produced through this model is used for distributed power supply, and the heat is used for adjacent district cooling and hot water production. They plan to install a tri-generation system that can simultaneously produce hydrogen, electricity and heat, making it possible to charge hydrogen cars.

Doosan Fuel Cell is responsible for hydrogen fuel cell supply and long-term maintenance, and Kolon Global is responsible for fuel supply, design, procurement, construction (EPC) and pipeline facility securing.

Doosan Fuel Cell explained that Kolon Global has the right to operate the sewage treatment plant, so it is relatively easy to commercialize, and it is a model that can use biogas generated from the local community as eco-friendly energy with which local governments, companies and residents can use equally.

The two companies plan to develop a business model this year and participate in mandatory clean hydrogen energy portfolio standards (CHPS) biddings from 2024. They will also collaborate on necessary permits and technology exchanges for the project.

“We will continue to build strategic partnerships with major companies to dominate the CHPS market and secure long-term orders,” said Jung Hyung-rak, CEO of Doosan Fuel Cell.
