Samyang Foods Co. announced Monday it has sold more than 4 billion packets of its uber-popular Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen, or buldak-bokkeum-myeon, to date.

The figure is more than half the world's population.

Samyang launched the spicy instant noodle product in April 2012.

Including the original flavor inspired by a Korean spicy stir-fried chicken dish, there are nine different flavors in the lineup, including creamy Carbo Hot Chicken and Chinese food-inspired varieties.

Accumulated sales hit 1 billion units in 2017, 2 billion in 2019 and 3 billion in 2021.

Samyang exports the instant noodles to some 90 countries worldwide.

The company exported 100 million won ($76,489) worth of the spicy noodles in 2017 and expects the figure to exceed 400 million won ($305,937) this year.

“We plan to push out products catered to overseas consumers' preferences and establish local offices to expand our presence in target markets,” a Samyang Foods employee told The Korea Economic Daily.

Samyang Foods was South Korea’s first instant ramen noodle maker.
