South Korea's SK Telecom Co. said on Tuesday that it will sell a next-generation broadcast platform, utilizing mobile edge computing (MEC) technology, to Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest media group in the US.

MEC is a technology that allows data to be exchanged between the cloud and user devices that are closer in proximity than central data centers.

Based on MEC technology, SK Telecom has developed a "media edge platform," a cloud-based virtualized broadcasting system that enables central broadcasting stations to efficiently operate regional broadcasting systems.

The company explained that this platform supports the ATSC 3.0 data broadcasting standard for ultra-high-definition broadcasting, allowing broadcasters to transmit data over the broadcasting network according to their desired schedule.

In addition to video and audio, the platform can also provide services such as customized local advertising and real-time emergency alerts.

"Through cooperation with Sinclair, a leading broadcaster in North America, and Dell, a global sales network, we will spread the innovation of next-generation broadcasting services from the United States to the world," said Ha Min-Yong, SK Telecom's chief development officer.
