South Korea's Doosan Enerbility Co. said on Thursday that it is pursuing a national project for localizing large-scale wind power generation systems in collaboration with four state-owned power companies and specialized small wind power enterprises.

In May this year, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with four state-owned power generators including Korea Offshore Wind Power, Korea East-West Power, Korea Southern Power, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and five small-, mid- firms to collaborate on a national project.

This project is part of the "The Second New and Renewable Energy R&D New Support Research and Development Project," led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP).

The project aims to connect the domestic energy supply chain from components to wind turbines and offshore wind public complexes. This strategy is expected to reduce the cost of wind turbines and enhance price competitiveness in the global market.

The participating companies plan to collaborate on developing 10 MW-class wind turbine technology, aiming to increase the localization rate of components to 70% by next year and conduct demonstrations in connection with offshore wind public complexes after 2027.

They are also considering participating in large-scale offshore wind farm development projects in South Korea.

Doosan Enerbility will be responsible for the design, assembly, installation, and full-scale demonstration of the 10 MW-class wind turbine.

This wind turbine model is designed for South Korea's low wind speed environment. It features a rotor (the rotating part of the generator) with a diameter of 205 meters (with blades measuring 100 meters long).

It can generate more than 30% power utilization even with an average wind speed of 6.5 meters per second.

Doosan Enerbility also plans to participate in component reliability testing and the development of automated equipment, with plans to invest over 50 billion won ($37.4 million) in research and development and factory expansion.
