South Korea's Hanwha Ocean Co. said on Thursday it received Approval in Principle (AIP) from classification society ABS for a 40,000 cubic meter liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier.
The project, initiated in 2023, involved collaboration with ABS, Greek shipping firm GasLog affiliate Ecolog, and Scottish cargo handling specialist Babcock Liquefied Gas Equipment (Babcock LGE).
Following assessments of the LCO2 carrier's basic performance, structural integrity, and cargo handling system (CHS) conceptual design, the consortium secured the AIP on June 5th.
Hanwha Ocean focused on reviewing the vessel's propulsion efficiency and overseeing detailed design of core components, including the crucial cargo hold.
Ecolog, a CCUS specialist, provided expertise on global industry requirements and operational know-how for LCO2 carriers.
Babcock LGE contributed to the CHS design, including the reliquefaction unit. ABS, headquartered in the U.S., reviewed and approved the overall design specifications.
LCO2 carriers are gaining attention as a means of transporting carbon as CCUS technologies advance.
